If you are trying to bring some much-needed attention to preservation efforts in your community, now is the time to apply for the Historic Districts Council’s annual \u201cSix to Celebrate\u201d program.<\/p>\n
The initiative was launched in 2011 and each year six preservation projects receive hands-on assistance from HDC on strategic planning, advocacy, and outreach. Groups accepted into the program are also eligible for modest reimbursable grants to support their preservation activities. So far, according to HDC, 38 individual landmarks and 12 historic districts have been locally designated as part of the program while other gains have included five historic districts listed in the National Register of Historic Places, a contextual downzoning, and 20 neighborhood surveys. Some of the Brooklyn neighborhoods that have been part of the program have included Bushwick, Crow Hill in Crown Heights, the Little Caribbean area of Flatbush, East Flatbush, Park Slope, Bay Ridge, East New York, Gowanus, Greenpoint, and Downtown Brooklyn. Details on all the neighborhoods, including walking tour booklets to purchase, are available at the ‘Six to Celebrate’ website<\/a>. <\/p>\n Applications are being accepted until Friday, December 20 and the final list will be announced in 2025. The organization encourages groups to apply that have a specific project or goal for their neighborhood in which the involvement of HDC can make an impact.
